10 packing tips you must know when moving house
Moving house can be a daunting prospect…but it doesn’t have to be.
Here is a checklist of packing supplies you need:
Small boxes (for the little things in life!)
Medium boxes
Large boxes
Heavy duty boxes
Wardrobe boxes
Packing tape
Bubble wrap
Old newspapers
Stretch wrap
Marker pen
Labels
P.S. Supermarkets and your local cash and carry probably have lots of empty boxes lying around waiting to be thrown away!
Here are Movevan’s top 10 tips to make moving a stress-free experience
Pack early
For a large house (2 bedrooms+), two months is enough time if you pack one box a day
For a smaller house/flat (studio or 1 bedroom), one month is suitable.
Remember this is an estimate!
Pack the items you don’t use on a daily basis
Start with the rooms you use the least. They likely contain the items you least need. For instance seasonal items (garden tools, coats and Christmas decorations) or books and DVDs. If you’re planning to move in Winter, pack all of your summer clothes.
Pack one room at a time
This is an important tip. It’s easy to get overwhelmed so, prioritise one room at a time to help you stay organised.
Declutter
Give your unwanted items to charity or sell them online (eBay and Gumtree are good choices). You could also ask your friends and family if they need anything you’re planning to sell.
Do not exceed the limit of box weight
Pack light items in large boxes and heavy items in small boxes. That way, you’ll be less likely to overload them and you’ll save yourself some backache!
Fill empty gaps
Fill any gaps in the boxes with old newspapers to secure the items and prevent any damages!
Label your boxes
Use a marker pen to write the contents of the box on the side and not on the top! (This willl make it easier to distinguish what’s what if they’re stacked) Use a different colour for each room to make it even easier to decipher! Doing this will help the movers, or anyone unloading, know which box needs to go where.
Put heavier boxes on the bottom
Put lighter boxes on top of heavier ones to make sure no breakable items…well, break!
Prepare a box of essentials
Start packing this early and add to it as the moving day approaches. Consider canned/boxed food, eating utensils, pots and pans, medicines/first aid kit, paperwork, toiletries, baby and pet supplies, washing up liquid, all purpose cleaner, scissors…even tea and coffee!)
Dispose of hazardous materials
The list is not exhaustive but includes paint cans, cleaning products and batteries!
